2024 Pike: Chinese Competition Daqiang

Among the practitioners of Chinese martial arts, it is widely believed that the Qiang (Pike) reigns supreme among weapons. In the Ming Dynasty manuscript " Shou Bi Lu/Record of Arms” by the martial artist Wu-shu (who happens to have a name sounding exactly the same as Wiushu/Martial Art), it is recorded: “Qiang is the king of all weapons, as all other weapons fail immediately against the Qiang." The importance of the Qiang on the battlefield is self-evident. Generally speaking, techniques with Qiang longer than 3 meters are considered closely guarded secrets in various martial arts systems, not to be learned until one became a proven long time studnet . The “Shou Bi Lu" also states: “If the person is not right, do not reveal the treasure even for a thousand gold."

The techniques of the Daqiang are greatly influenced by the conditions of the combat environment. On the battlefield, it is mainly used for striking and thrusting, while in competition, there are more variations in technique. The “Shou Bi Lu" describe it as “defending by seeing flesh and separating the Qiang, attacking by sticking to the staff and penetrating deeply." This time, we have invited Coach Terry Wu from the “Plus Baji” to teach Chinese Daqiang. Coach Terry Wu has extensively studied various techniques for combat with cold weapons and has unique insights into the application of the Daqiang.
