2026 Yoseikan Kobudo: Tonfa

Tonfa is a traditional weapon originating from Okinawan Kobudo (Ryukyu Kobudo). It is believed to have evolved from agricultural tools or mill handles before becoming a refined martial weapon during the Ryukyu Kingdom period.

Compared to longer weapons such as swords or spears, the Tonfa is distinguished by its exceptional mobility and close-range control. Its structure allows seamless transitions between striking, blocking, trapping, and rotational attacks within very short combat distances.

We are honored to welcome Nicole Smith, head instructor of Blood and Iron Martial Arts, to present a workshop on the rapier and dagger. The rapier is often used in combination with various off-hand weapons—including the cloak, shield, and most commonly, the dagger. This long-short weapon pairing offers both offensive and defensive advantages, enabling dynamic engagements and increasing survivability in combat. This workshop is open to all participants, regardless of prior experience with the rapier. The focus of this seminar will be on creating “A Wall of Steel".
