2026 Yoseikan Kobudo: Tonfa

Tonfa is a traditional weapon originating from Okinawan Kobudo (Ryukyu Kobudo). It is believed to have evolved from agricultural tools or mill handles before becoming a refined martial weapon during the Ryukyu Kingdom period.

Compared to longer weapons such as swords or spears, the Tonfa is distinguished by its exceptional mobility and close-range control. Its structure allows seamless transitions between striking, blocking, trapping, and rotational attacks within very short combat distances.

In Yoseikan Budo, Tonfa practice preserves elements of traditional kobudo while also integrating modern martial concepts such as body mechanics, distance management, fluidity, and dynamic movement.

This workshop will introduce:

* Historical and cultural background of the Tonfa

* Fundamental grips and handling principles

* Defensive and counter-attacking concepts

* Basic striking and rotational techniques

* Rhythm and coordination of double Tonfa

* Unique Tonfa characteristics within Yoseikan Budo

This workshop is suitable for practitioners interested in Japanese classical martial arts, weapon systems, HEMA exchange, and functional body movement training.
