This workshop focuses on the 1862 work Complete Treatise of Fencing of the Spanish Saber (Tratado completo de esgrima de sable español) by Jaime Merelo y Casademunt. Merelo is widely recognized as the final master of the 19th-century Destreza school, having effectively adapted 17th-century rapier theory for the use of the military saber.
In the Spanish saber system, Merelo emphasizes the connection between actions. A cut is not merely a means of inflicting damage, but a tactical tool to control the engagement and pressure the opponent. Through the integration of cuts and thrusts during the bind, the system ensures a fluid, continuous transition between offense and defense. In this lecture, we will utilize foundational footwork and technical drills to help participants experience this unique approach to saber fencing.
Instructor: Schaow Fang. An instructor at Vor & Nach HEMA, specializing in German longsword, messer, and Spanish rapier. Fang is among the few practitioners in Taiwan to have developed a competitive system based strictly on the original interpretation of historical Destreza treatises—successfully bridging the gap between historical scholarship and modern tournament performance.
