This workshop focuses on the 1862 work Complete Treatise of Fencing of the Spanish Saber (Tratado completo de esgrima de sable español) by Jaime Merelo y Casademunt. Merelo is widely recognized as the final master of the 19th-century Destreza school, having effectively adapted 17th-century rapier theory for the use of the military saber.

In the Spanish saber system, Merelo emphasizes the connection between actions. A cut is not merely a means of inflicting damage, but a tactical tool to control the engagement and pressure the opponent. Through the integration of cuts and thrusts during the bind, the system ensures a fluid, continuous transition between offense and defense. In this lecture, we will utilize foundational footwork and technical drills to help participants experience this unique approach to saber fencing.

Fang is among the few practitioners in Taiwan to have developed a competitive system based strictly on the original interpretation of historical Destreza treatises—successfully bridging the gap between historical scholarship and modern tournament performance.
