The Oberhau — a downward strike — is the most fundamental offensive action in German longsword, and perhaps the most intuitive move one learns when first picking up a blade. Yet, the Oberhau manifests in countless variations depending on the practitioner. Why do subtle differences in execution lead to such disparate results? How can some fencers achieve a clean cut through a target with minimal effort, while others deliver a strike that feels overwhelmingly heavy and dominant in the bind?
“The devil is in the details." In this workshop, we will dissect the Oberhau by examining its various forms, mechanics of power generation, cutting line, and spatial control. Join us to peel back the layers of this foundational strike and gain a new, nuanced understanding of what the Oberhau can truly achieve.
