Bolognese swordsmanship was prominent during the 15th and 16th centuries, a time when the simple cross-guard of the arming sword was gradually evolving into the more complex hilt of the side sword. This evolution included enhancements such as finger rings to protect the index finger while improving control, making single-handed swords more agile and beloved by many swordsmen. Bologness system emphasizes prompting opponents to leave their guard before launching an attack, a type of action collectively known as provocation. Describing it as the art of provocation is certainly fitting.
The breadth of Bolognese swordsmanship encompasses the use of off-hand weapons, including daggers, paired swords, cloaks, shields, etc. This time, we have invited Coach Jerry Leung from Hong Kong’s Avalon HEMA Guild, specializing in the use of one-handed swords, to deliver a lecture on the art of provocation. This tactic involves actively exposing or creating vulnerabilities to guide the opponent into attacking, making it a must-attend for enthusiasts of one-handed sword techniques!
