2025 Kubotan Self-Defense: Practical Techniques with a Pocket-Sized Weapon

Kubotan is a martial arts system developed in the 1970s by Japanese karate master Takayuki Kubota, designed specifically for U.S. law enforcement officers. The goal was to create a method of subduing suspects without causing permanent injury.

It utilizes a small, easily portable, low-lethality handheld stick that is completely legal to carry. Initially taught to female officers in the LAPD, the system quickly gained popularity due to its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of learning.

The name “Kubotan" is a combination of Kubota (the founder’s surname) and baton (referring to a police stick or short baton).

The tool is used to strike nerve clusters, pressure points, or joints, making it effective for pain compliance or enhancing the force of strikes. When combined with a keyring and keys, it can also be used like a small flail to target an opponent’s face.

At Yoseikan, the Kubotan techniques have been further developed by Head Instructor Kevin Sheng, who has adapted them into a system more focused on practical striking and grappling. With just a couple of hours of training, anyone can easily learn and start applying these techniques.
