The " Joseon Shifa" are recorded in the 86th volume of the Wubei Zhi, a military treatise compiled by Mao Yuanyi during the Ming dynasty. It details twenty-four techniques based on four core movements: striking, thrusting, deflecting, and winding, all connected through mnemonic verses. According to tradition, these techniques originated from a two-handed sword system that had been lost since the Tang dynasty and were later reintroduced to China from Korea after periods of warfare and upheaval. The Joseon Shifa represent an important historical source for traditional Chinese two-handed sword.
Coach Luo Da-Cheng from Jian Zhen Wushu (見真武學) has conducted in-depth research on this system, reorganizing and interpreting the entire set. He believes it was designed as a military swordsmanship for training soldiers, intended to be both quick to learn and capable of deeper, advanced development. If participants interested in traditional Chinese swordsmanship, don’t miss his workshop!
