Doyle Irish Stick Fighting (Bataireacht) is a traditional Irish martial art centered on the shillelagh – a hardwood walking stick used for both self-defense and honor duels. Preserved for generations by the Doyle family of County Connacht, it offers a complete system of striking, guarding, and grappling techniques. The style emphasizes dynamic footwork, off-hand control, and deceptive angles.
This time, we are honored to welcome Dan Nizza, head instructor of the Tainan Martial Arts Club, to lead a workshop on Irish stick fighting. Once practiced in rural Ireland and passed down orally, it has revived in modern times. As Dan notes: “Irish stick fighting is more than a weapon martial art, Bataireacht embodies Irish resilience and pride – an enduring legacy shaped by pracitical combat and cultural identity."
